1.Mind mapping 

Mind mapping is a tool that helps you to easily understand the information written in several pages of listed information by means of a pictorial representation. Several pages of complex brain stormed ideas can be represented by a single picture of mind map in a simple format making your understanding clear, effective learning and improves the problem solving ability. You will be able to remember & recollect the association between the connected ideas.

In the center is the main topic circled and surrounded by various related topics in smaller circles connected with branches. It is very similar to analysis, but the branching out smaller topics need not be the sub elements of central topic. Here, You are not breaking major topic in to smaller executable elements .

The branches are related topics, which further branches out in to other related topics. It is a very useful tool for Idea inventors and researchers. Who will the big picture of what are all the issues they have take in to account on the whole. What are all the other fields they have to associate at what stage of their invention. This help them to construct their PDCA wheel.

Every topic express with one or two words .use specific colours for every branch and continue the same colour for various levels of branching .stop branching when you find the topics getting repeated. It means you have reached the end for that particular branch. Move on to next topic . You will also find inter connection between the topics of branches.

2.Brain storming

Brain storming can also be used at any circumstances, may be your are in a middle of simple & generic problem you may come across while developing an invention and also for generating ideas. You do not know what to do next & you can not ask any body since , your invention is secret. Under such circumstances you can write down on a chart your problem and allow the ideas to flow through your mind and register them.let us take the case ,

 

There is no judgment on the quality of ideas that flows. No need for connectivity also. Just allow free flow of creative ideas. Record them. Normally it is conducted for 20 minutes. Only at the end of the session ideas are analysed and suitable ideas are taken for implementation. The rest of Ideas some times becomes tangible for a totally new idea by it self. Pour out as much Ideas as possible with an assumption that if not now then never , the world is going to end after that. You are not allowed to take your own sweet time, because what is needed is the spontaneous flow. 

 

Once collection of idea is completed then the next step is that  you will start grouping similar / related ideas and minimize the varities (some times a new Idea will emerge when you combine) .The next step is you will start eliminating the less significant & unwanted ideas (Remember In the beginning you only allowed even Bizzare ideas also to get in place  )until you freeze with ultimate Idea.

 

Brain storming can be both Individual or with a group. Individual is more powerful than group, because you won’t get criticized , you need not wait for your turn to come ( by the time you will forget your idea) and there is no mental block

3.Idea Analysis 

Idea analysis is like the process of deduction wherein you cut down a bigger concept into smaller ones. As such, analysis breaks down complex ideas into smaller fragmented concepts so as to come up with an improved understanding.

If your main objective is at the center and you start breaking the end objective in to smaller components all around the end objective. The smaller components form the first circle of various ways & means to achieve the main objective. Further every smaller component (ways & means )are broken down in to number of tiny components (starting points) around every smaller component(ways & means) . You will reach a point that you can not further break down  any more . That is your starting point or first action point to reach every smaller component (ways & means). Once all the smaller components are fulfilled you will achieve the end objective.

4.Idea Synthesis

Synthesis, on the other hand, resolves a conflict set between an antithesis and a thesis by settling what truths they have in common. In the end, the synthesis aims to make a new proposal or proposition.

This tool help in the initial stage of screening the ideas among the cluster of ideas you have deposited in your Idea bank. When you list them, some of the ideas may have a thin line common among them. You will be able to connect them under a single thread like the stem of umbrella as the connecting point for the 8 to 10 edges of the umbrella. This stem will emerge as a new idea, which will be more powerful idea than the edges.

5.Log book:

It is the first step in Idea invention process. Log book is a disciplinary approach for an inventor.

It is similar to simple diary writing habit. Date wise you will record what ever the progress happened on your invention. Persons you met. You can also upload photos, images & pictures of your invention progress . You can write down your things to do and things done, when, what and how? Print a hard copy of it and preserve. You will find this log book of greater useful, at times when you have to prove the authenticity of your invention. Only when you start writing the log book you will be poured with ideas and subsequent plans. Log book is there to record what ever that has happened .

6.Plan, Do ,Check and Act (PDCA) the way of life

This cycle of activity need to be carried out in our day to day life (tasks at office or at home) leave alone for new inventions. It is such a significant mantra in management.  If an activity is preplanned well , you can take it for granted that half the work is done. It a continual improvement tool. You repeat the PDCA until you reach a stage of standardization on full scale. This in other words called Deming wheel. It is done at every mile stone of your inventive process.

Design or revise production/business process components to improve results. Define the problem statement clearly & accurately. Use fish bone analysis, 5 why ? or Mind mapping to find out the main causes and drill down to root cause. Understand clearly the back ground and make scope specific (end of the tunnel) .A clear objective statement. Prepare a clear action plan , where you want to go and how you want to go ?

DO

Implement the plan and measure its performance. Carrying out irreversible containment action for all the root causes for a pilot size / proto sample and not full scale. During the process of implementation, you will collect the data parallels, you will analyse the concluded solution and start implementing it. 

CHECK

Assess the measurements, monitor and evaluate the processes and results against objectives and specifications and report the results to decision makers. Is there a way to check the effectiveness of corrective action?  What to do if your initial implementation is not successful. You will repeat plan,do & check until desired results are achieved by considering lessons learnt.

ACT

Decide on changes needed to improve the process and apply actions to the outcome for necessary improvement. This means reviewing all steps (Plan, Do, Check, Act) and modifying the process to improve it before its next cycle of implementation. Standardize to full scale. Since, it is done on a full scale you will once again do a Plan, Do & check giving weightage to scale size.

7.SWOT:

By doing a final analysis of SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) you will be prepared to get it to action. It is an assurance that you are not landing in to a dark planet. SWOT supports your calculated approach and gives clarity at any point of time.

Strength: Write down all the points. If you have more points to support your strength you will be more confident in taking forward. You can also sharpen your strong point issues and keep on updating to add value to the process of invention.

The strong points about the particular idea may be on your thorough knowledge , your hands on number of years of experience ,Your own filed expertise, you will be able to accomplish more of your self,  A niche product, high profits possibility, large business volumes, world wide market, more attractive to investors, worth for huge TOT/License or your own manufacture, attract more consumers, etc

Weakness: Knowing your weakness is much more important than knowing all your strengths. Strengths are always with you. Even if you want to ignore it, it will play it’s role with out your opting for it. You have to be more prepared to counter your weaknesses. Do a PDCA (Plan ,Do,Check & Act) on how to counter your weaknesses as explained in the earlier pages.

The weak points may be your financial strength , depending more on others, absence of provisional patent, delay, No time other busy schedules, absence of proper design & drawing, Unable to get prototype manufactures, etc.

Opportunities: There are 2 opportunities we have to keep in mind.

The first and foremost is to explore all possible means to measure how big the opportunities, if you succeed in this invention. Measure it, mark it and evaluate it. Your funders are more curious than you.

2nd opportunities are exploring & evaluating what is the opportunity you got to counter your weaknesses and threats. Because, every problem (weakness / Threat ) a door for your opportunity.

Threats: Threats are the possible dangers like infringement by others on your technology, etc. How are you going to keep a watch? As explained already the challenge of protecting an idea is much greater than your great invention it self. Not only infringement, but take an account of all possible worst things that can happen, while you are taking your invention forward and you will find at opportunity to counter only when you list the threats.

STRENGTH

 Being a mechanical engineer  I have several  years of experience in handling high pressure Hydraulic devices . Being a designer i have completed technical design drawings and i my self can manufacture the hydraulic clamping device.  Hydraulic devices as technology are more advanced , simple and more reliable compared to mechanical devices. There will be huge cost advantages and will be most preferred option by industries. Raw materials, skilled man power and machineries for manufacturing are available abundant in and around Indigenously. There is Huge market with in India & over seas since , i am the monopoly. Already Several VC are ready to invest . There is no need for any support from mentors side.

WEAKNESS

As such no major weakness could be predicted. Field testing will have to be conducted after protype manufacturing. Any need for Improvement can be fulfilled on continual improvement front, which is common for any inventor

OPPORTUNITIES

For a long time the component manufacturing industries are using only mechanical means of devices for guiding, feeding and clamping. Mechanical clamping systems are subject to wear & tear which is main drawback which causes inaccuracies, rejection of parts and heavy loss. Even though the industry is looking for an innovative alternate clamping mechanism, so far no body has successfully came out one such. Indigenous market it self accounts for Rs 50 Cr /PA and global requirement would cross more than Rs 500 Cr /PA. and my newly developed hydraulic clamping technology can be extended to various other industries and applicationa also with slight modifications. I will patent my invention and have opportunity to set up have plant to cater global needs through VC . I can also license  opn TOT. Funding will not be a constraint since I am the monopoly. Very high ROI , profitability & growth are foreseen

THREATS

Technology Infringement is the anticipated threat ,which can be over come by IP rights world wide. The life cycle is not a threat since, this is the future technology.

8. Force field analysis

It is decision making tool. This is most widely used to evaluate at circumstances where there are points on both positive as well as negative sides while taking a decision. Which can otherwise be termed as “For” and “Against” for the subject analyzed.

One way you can decide on the side which ever scores higher. On the other side, If you have already  taken a decision to go ahead with your decision, it will help you to reveal(free see the problems )   the points which are against  and you can start mitigating the points that are against and convert all the points favorable  . You can also think of strengthening the points which are already for but, gaining a low number of points.

The factors chosen for “For “ and “Against” need to be number of valuable points from the point of Innovation, Attractive to consumer, Cost saving, Energy conservative , technological advancement for longer life cycles, simplification, Capital investments,  Impractical / unrealistic and affordable and so on .

You can score from 1 to 5 where as 1 for least influencing and 5 for strong influencing see example.

Some times, because of it’s unbiased in nature , you may also end up discarding an already decided assignment due to strong “Against” influence. Normally when you are working alone you will see points which are more favorable towards your decision. But, this tool reveals the reality from 3rd person perspective.

There is a  4 point criteria’s every idea will have to under go. The measurement criteria are L/M/H- Low/Medium/High - which means like what extend the benefit on every criteria going to be. Low  extend Give 1 to 3 points– not very attractive ,Just let it be in the list as last priority  . Medium extend Give 4 to 6 points  – makes sense hence stays in the priority. High  extend give 7 to 9 points- First priority and very important.

Where as for the criteria your investment requirement alone reverse the awarding marks. Low extend Give 7 to 9 points– not very attractive ,Just let it be in the list as last priority  . Medium extend Give 4 to 6 points – makes sense hence stays in the priority. High extend give 1 to 3 points- First priority and very important.

Here is what your knowledge & experience plays an important role to in giving weightage on 1 to 9 scale .

       1.Sales volume : Expected sales volume depends on consumer segment. Whether it is high volume consumption . For example the refrigerator is low volume compared to razor blade. As an inventor you will know this.

       2.Profitability : If it is an innovative product which never existed in the market, may fetch you great profit than improvement products. Some products, you can’t claim more profit/unit, but it may be compensated with large volume sales. If the cost of commercial production is going to be so high, there is no point of developing that product. For example if a newly invented Never blunt razor blade is going to cost Rs 1000/each, compared Rs 2/ use & throw blades , what are going to decide? Are you going to continue that invention or Quit?

       3.Life cycle  : How long this invented technology is going to survive? Naturally until next invention comes? You will definitely know based on the kinds of researches are happening around you. Like your smart phone, if every year new technology is introduced with more value added services, definitely you will not poke your nose in that. Many a times you know that you are going to rule the market for the next 10 to 20 years with your patent protection rights, then it is a good Invention.

       4.Your own Investment : Finally this is very vital. Presently the chances of financing for mere idea by any institution is almost nil . ( May be our consortium if it picks up well with like minded people like you and me , we can think of gathering all the stake holders in a platform to support Inventors like you and me). I said this as an example, to register in your mind very strongly, In the present scenario you only have to manage the funds on your own way. Are you not going to enjoy IPrights ? Is it not a huge property for you and your children ? Who knows , if things goes well as per your plan, a single invention may bring you  millions or Billions  in a short time ,unlike a manufacturing industry or a service industry which has to over come several criteria’s and Investments in the first place . You may wish to take partners who fund your invention, incase of fund constraint to take your invention forward. Remember with out pain, no gain. The investment referred here is not the full-scale production investment. We are referring only your R&D investment.

After Applying 4 point criteria matrix my Idea list has been rearranged with following priority

The one with highest weightage becomes my first priority to take up for final test .  You will  appreciate the need for such a matrix. Hence, start working on Ideas also systematically. Take it seriously from the first activity of capturing Ideas and systematically Analyze it . Record the analysis results , evaluate and finalize priority. With all this your mind becomes organized & trained mind. You will gain more self confident that you are in the right track. The reason for moving systematically is to ensure that you must be able to succeed in your 1st Idea it self as a successful invention. You may wish to spend some time in analyzing all possible pros & cons well in advance before freezing on an Idea for Taking up for developing as an invention , than repenting latter for having chosen a wrong Idea. You may invest some extra time on the whole, but, better late than never.

10. Cause & effect (Fish bone Analysis )

This is one method of root cause analysis to find the root cause of the problem. There may be several causes which for a problem, but until you identify the root cause the problem will resurface repeatedly.

The method of approach is

1. Choose a problem to be resolved and that becomes the head of the fish.

2. Minimum of 4 major factors are considered, you can increase the number of factors on need base. They form the fins of the fish on either side

The factors may be named as Man, Machine, materials & methods

Or

The factors may be People, Equipment’s, workplace, Assignment depends on the project you are in to.

3. Now  you have to make branches for every contributing factor which are all causes for the problem under a particular factor. These are main causes

4. Now under every main cause create branches and mention the causes for that cause and which becomes the root cause.

5. After identifying the root cause it becomes easy for you to mitigate the problem.

Start validating every root cause for it’s contribution by inspection and mitigate which are really

This approach reveals all the hidden causes and is an unbiased approach.  It is a combination of Brain storming and mind mapping in a systematic way.

For an inventor this tool is the mother of all tools.

11.Idea to Invention flow chart

Flow chart may be pertaining to a product or a process. It is the systematic way of representing various processes sequentially from the start of the task till the end of achieving desired results of the task. All the processes involved are diagrammatically  represented using symbols which makes it easier for others to understand than by reading several pages of detailed description of processes.

Simple flow chart involves few symbols start, process, Input/output, data storage, decision and end are connected by arrows . Instead of explaining in 1000 sentences, a single page flow chart will reveal more clarity.

Flow chart will be the basis on which you will prepare a detailed description of your entire invention process.  After which you will create SOPS and standardize the process. Normally it is drawn top down .Once you start using flow charts, you will be more convinced that with out flow chart, you will not intend to start any assignment.

12.Check lists:

Once the Check lists are made as one time exercises, it will which make our easier through out the invention processes .Check lists are drafted after you make the flow chart and complete detailed process description. Check lists can be for the entire invention process (called master check list) on the whole and also for every stage of your invention progress (mini check lists stage wise ).

One such master check list is shown in example “Road Map- Ideas to Invention systematic approach as per flow chart” This it self is a check list (generalized)  for a successful invention process . All the 37 points are check points. You will prepare your invention specific check list.

With regard to stage wise check list, the check points can be a simple questions for ensuring the fulfilment of critical control points and can be answered with simple yes/no.Few example check points below

14.  5 why? (Root cause analysis)

I would suggest you to use this powerful tool as much as possible, not to restrict only for root cause analysis . It will help you understand the issue from the grass root level and once in for all permanent remedial measure can be taken to mitigate.

The initial answer will only peel off the symptoms or simply causes , every time when it boils down to next why ? and true concrete answers the root cause of the problem surfaces clearly .  Hence, from the answer the next question why will arise until the exact root cause is drilled down. It is a very powerful root cause analysis tool. The questioning why? Need not stop at 5 sequences ,it can continue beyond that also for complex problems.

15.Time lines & mile stones:

An activity planned well will never fail. The first step of PDCA is this planning portion.       

Noting works if you don’t have a time line & mile stone chart and follow it meticulously. Strong will , desire and commitment are key points to individual inventors. You are the boss for your self, hence , there is every chance that you will procrastinate and jeopardize the whole process if you are not committed to your self. No doubt you have self motivation, still you get your self clutched in to a mechanism which will remain you when you have to do what? This will save enormous time & money.

If you are working systematically you will enjoy your invention process . Else you will get demoralized. You will not feel the burden that you are carrying heavy load on your head by all alone. Allow systems to support you.

19 .Final Conclusions after Patent search

 

First activity is process of elimination. You are cancelling the previously 8th priority item , because it is already existing some where and there is also no scope for any improvement. Reason , may be a large MNC may be handing that Invention, with a vast vision adopting all future technological improvements and so on .

 

The Idea which was 7th priority earlier , has finally become the most significant Inventive Idea - But, you had a problem of need for high investment and not feasible by you.Now that,either you can form a team for funding and work on it or move it to last priority to work at a latter date.  Only by doing such detailed analysis you will get more suitable solutions. Just because it occupies the 1st priority , you are not going to land on it blindly. Still you have a choice to take a practical and safe decision.

 

The Idea that was 1 st priority earlier had now gone to 4th priority. Since, that process is already existing and some one had already patented , but as per your Idea there is huge scope for improvement hence, it got score of 6 and on top of that ,the  improvement is a technological break through. Now finally became 4th priority . From our previous analysis, this Idea of process invention does not involve any fund requirement and you will be able to accomplish all by your self .        F. write relevant formulas , coding, Algorithms , formulae and equations to validate your invention.

       G. How will you self evaluate your invention, whether it had fulfilled the desired results in terms of all standards & requirement specification with tolerances.

       H. Do a SIPOC analysis Or Mind mapping ( depending on the magnitude of your invention )using the web tool for the detailed analysis of activities involved between supplier and end user ( consumer ) . This will reveal all the activities & stake holders need to be involved and their role start from raw materials, suppliers, planning, Designers, Flow charts, Check lists for every stage of your invention , Time lines & mile stones, Mentors, Instruments & equipment’s, support of testing labs, proto makers, what is going to be out put and how it reaches the customer.     

       I.   For simple invention, only mind mapping is sufficient in a simple way whare as for a significant invention a systematic through SIPOC may be needed. Find do a mind mapping , if you are not satisfied , take it to SIPOC.

       J. Market research and evaluate net worth of your invention

       K. Do a life cycle study of your invention, how long this invented technology will last . ( so that you can start thinking for the next level once implemented )

Decide the stage vice operation/process sequence for very element and decide the critical control point for every stage , define the dimensional requirement specification (with tolerances permissible) and how to achieve the same? Need for instruments & accessories for validating the out come.

23. Make an action plan / stage wise Implementation plan . Split your whole of invention program in to number of segments for easiness and priorities them
